A new thread emerged in OnePlus forums last week confirming the latest OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 5 can’t stream HD content from various online services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies etc. The inability to play high-definition videos is obviously not the hardware but the lack of DRM security clearance. OnePlus devices have Widevine Level 3 DRM whereas to play HD content on these popular streaming services, a device needs Widevine Level 1.
This DRM security does not affect the playback because the content will still play in SD resolution instead of HD, without users noticing it right away. HD videos on YouTube are also unaffected.
This is an interesting discovery and makes us question OnePlus’ decision to omit HD playback on these services. A quick check on the OnePlus 3/3T also yields the same Widevine Level 3 certification.
However, good thing about this issue blowing up is that OnePlus has acknowledged it and confirmed to roll out a software update for OnePlus 5T that will enable Widevine Level 1. We’re not sure if the same DRM security will be enabled for the other devices.
