The X550JK comes under Asus’ X series line but one look at the laptop is enough to say that it’s not targeted at a multimedia enthusiast. The X550JK in fact, goes for the gamer crowd and since we consider ourselves a part of the same clan, it made sense to see if Asus’ claim of being a portable gaming machine is worthy enough.
If you happen to check X550JK on Asus’ website, you’ll be wrongly shown a laptop design that offers a classic spin-line finish. However, the reality is slightly different. The laptop boasts a combination of black and maroon colours that will appeal to gamers as it associates with Asus’ gaming sub-brand ROG (Republic of Gamers).
The laptop’s exterior boasts a shiny black hue along with Mayan-inspired design, which Asus has taken quite a liking to, on the sides. The laptop is just 31.7mm thick, which is good enough for a high-performance laptop.
The X550JK-DM132H is the only SKU available in India that features a 4th Gen Intel Core i7 4710HQ processor, 8GB RAM and Nvidia GeForce 850M GPU and needless to say, the laptop handles most current games well. Admittedly, you don’t get to play the game in high settings but a little compromise, thanks to Nvidia GeForce Experience that optimises the game according to the PC’s performance, ensures a smooth lag-free gaming experience. The two disappointing things we felt that hindered our otherwise good gaming session was the heat dissipation and no backlit keyboard. Although the machine is noise free, the heat dissipation is very high and not very conducive to playing a game while placing the laptop on your lap. To its credit though, the X550JK remains cool near the palm rest areas. Another disappointment was the absence of backlit on the keyboard. To complement, the laptop’s colour combination, Asus has gone with maroon coloured letters on black keyboard, which means there’s a high tendency for you to hit the wrong keys frequently when playing in the dark or in dimly lit rooms.
Apart from these, the X550JK is a good performer. The laptop has 1TB of storage space that ensures you can install and play a lot of games, a 15.6-inch Full HD matte display, USB 3.0 support, HDMI and SonicMaster for improved audio output. There’s also Ethernet, Bluetooth, SD card slot, webcam, a DVD writer and 4-cell battery that gives a run time of just over 2 hours.
All said and done, the X550JK is a good overall performer and if you can overlook the excessive heat dissipation and no backlit keyboard, the X550JK gives little reason to complain about prolonged gaming sessions.
The X550JK retails for Rs. 69,990.
