Nvidia unveils Maxwell architecture-based GeForce GTX 980 and 970 GPUs

September 19, 2014 By Kunal Gangar Leave a Comment

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980

Nvidia today announced its top of the line GPUs – GeForce GTX 980 and 970 GPUs. The GPUs are based on Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture, which is company’s 10th-generation GPU architecture after Kepler and brings in new technologies like Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI), multi-frame sampled antialiasing (MFAA), dynamic super resolution (DSR), VR Direct and energy efficiency.

Nvidia says the introduction of VXGI solves “most challenging problem” – realistic lighting while MFAA results in improved rendering quality.

The DSR or Dynamic Super Resolution is something interesting because the GPU can render a particular frame in 4K resolution and then scaled down to the monitor’s resolution for a sharper picture.

VR Direct is to tap on the potential of virtual reality market that is expected to make big waves in the coming years.

As for the hardware specs, the GeForce GTX 980 comes with 2048 CUDA cores, 4GB GDDR5 256-bit memory, base clock of 1126MHz, 3 Display Ports, 1 HDMI port and 1 Dual-link DVI. The GeForce GTX 970 reduces the CUDA cores to 1664 with base clock at 1050MHz. It also features 4GB GDDR5 256-bit memory and comes with the same set of connectors.

The GeForce GTX 980 will sell in India for Rs. 46,000 while the GTX 970 will retail for Rs. 28,000.
