ST-Ericsson will demo a smartphone prototype at the MWC later this month with an application processor clocked at 3GHz. This will be the first time any chip at such high clock speed will power a smartphone. ST-Ericsson will use NovaThor L8580 platform with 3GHz eQuad AP and multimode modem to showcase the prototype.
However, don’t expect a 3GHz smartphone anytime soon. ST-Ericsson notes that it will just be a demo to validate the company as an “innovator” and the initial commercial version of NovaThor L8580 will have Cortex-A9s clocked at 2.5GHz. L8580 will also have a PowerVR SGX544 GPU and support for LTE-FDD, LTE-TDD, HSPA+, GSM, TD-SCDMA in the same chipset.
