If the current trend is any indication, Near Field Communications (NFC) will be a rage this year. Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO Research In Motion confirmed during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that some forthcoming BlackBerry smartphones will contain NFC chips in 2011. NFC is aggressively being promoted by cell phone makers along with carriers that will allow users to do contactless payment and more.
During talks with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and NTT DoCoMo CEO Riuji Yamada at MWC, Balsillie said “many, if not most” of his company’s smartphones released this year would include NFC capabilities.
Google has already initiated showing off Android’s NFC capabilities with its Nexus S smartphone and Samsung too announced the new Wave 578 with NFC at MWC.
