
If you’re wondering why so many companies are dabbling in the mobile handset business in India, Gartner’s latest report has the answer for you. According to Gartner, they’re expecting the Indian mobile handset sales to reach a whopping 138.6m handsets by end of 2010. This, if you compare with 2009, it’s a 18.5 percent rise from 117m units. Gartner expects the positive pattern right till 2014 where the total handset sales will surpass 206 million units.
Gartner’s report also throws some other important facts like:
– India constitutes approx. 10 percent of worldwide handset sales but still remains a price sensitive market.
– The average selling price of the device is about $52 with 85 percent of the devices costing below $100.
– Smartphone sales will rise up to 18 percent by 2014.
– 95 percent of the consumers use prepaid connection.
