Sony India has gone offensive in a bid to corner majority of the camcorder market. With an aim to capture about 85 percent of the camcorder market share and achieve 50% growth this financial year, Sony has announced a bunch of camcorders targeting consumers at different price points.
Starting with the most affordable, the DCR-SX44E and DCR-SX63E are priced at Rs. 14,990 and Rs. 16,990 respectively and support standard video recording, 60X optical zoom and a 2.7-inch touchscreen. The only difference between both these camcorders is the storage – DCR-SX44E has 4GB flash memory whereas SX63E has 16GB flash. Both the cameras support MS Pro Duo or SD cards and Sony will bundle a 4GB MS Duo with SX44E bumping the total storage to 8GB.
Moving up the ladder are DCR-SR68E and DCR-SR88E. These camcorders are similar to its cheaper siblings but integrate huge storage. The former boasts an 80GB HDD while the SR88E comes with a 120GB hard drive. The SR68E will go for Rs. 19,990 and SR88E for Rs. 23,990.
Finally, it’s the CX150E, XR150E and XR550E camcorders that support full HD 1080p video recording using H.264 compression and Exmor R CMOS sensor for ultimate low-light performance. The CX150E is priced at Rs. 29,990 and integrates 16GB flash memory, 2.7-inch display, 25X optical zoom and a 3MP sensor to capture still images. Sony is also bundling a 16GB memory card along with it.
The Rs. 39,990 XR150E is the same as CX150E but comes with a 120GB HDD. The XR550E on the other hand, features wide-angle G Lens, 10X optical zoom, 12MP sensor for still images, 3.5-inch screen and 240GB HDD. Its priced at Rs. 59,990.

In my humble opinion. If Sony wanted to secure 85% of the market in India, they would package a Camcist aiming device with every unit sold. This fixes the problem of being disconnected from the action due to a complete reliance of the LCD screen. The first company to align itself with this mechanical device will see it’s market share soar.

Thanks for sharing this. I love video photography and recently I purchased Sony DCR-SR88E Camcorder. It has great zooming capacity of 60x optical and 200x digital. In Nov. I would visit Sikkim and this trip would be my first tour with my handycam. I wish I get some amazing videos with my new handy.
