UPDATE: Lenovo contacted to let us know that this isn’t a recall but a measure to ensure complete customer satisfaction. “Lenovo has not had a battery recall. This is a service extension program to provide (bonus 12-month) coverage above and beyond the normal warranty to ensure complete customer satisfaction. Service and warranty upgrades and special programs (of which this is an example) are fairly routine and help Lenovo maintain the highest levels of customer satisfaction.”
So a battery recall is generally associated to some overheating or potential fire hazard but Lenovo’s latest recall has a different reason. Apparently, ThinkPad T60/T61/R60/R61/X60/X61 model batteries fail sometimes and display errors like “Irreparable damage” or “Battery cannot be charged”.
If you’re a user of any of the aforementioned models, you can download and run a diagnostic tool to check the battery’s status. If it answers in negative, the tool will direct you to the free battery replacement webpage. And yes, the recall is applicable worldwide.
