Stem cells have often been associated to cure and combat diseases and with the latest breakthrough in the labs of an Australian university, it will help to regain partial eyesight too. The researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia use stem cells to coat contact lens, which then repairs a patient’s corneal disease.
The technique is to extract few stem cells from the patient’s good eye and coat them on the contact lens for 10 days. After the stipulated period, the lens is placed into the patient’s eyes, effectively transferring the stem cells from the lens to the eyes repairing the cornea.
Doctors reckon this type of healing is simple, cheap and risk-free as it does not depend on the acceptance from the patient’s body for the donor’s organ.
