SatNav, India’s first GPS service provider has introduced a new service dubbed as SatGuide LCU (Lost? Need Directions? Call Us!).
The working of the service is pretty simple.
A user wanting to find an address calls a SatNav toll-free number >> gives his location details >> the LCU executive notes it down and he guides the user live or sends an SMS with instructions.
The service is innovative but the biggest dampener I feel is the price. No, I don’t expect such a service to be free but charging 100 bucks for just 15 minutes of talk time is insane.
Most of the mid range and high end phones come with GPS these days. Fire up Google Maps with an active GPRS connection and he’ll reach his destination easily at a lesser cost than LCU. However, if you’re arguing about users with entry level phones, I don’t think they would want to spend around 2% of their phone’s cost on a voice based location service which needs a refill after few mins.
SatNav seriously needs to think about its pricing model or else the service is headed for a big failure. They need to increase the minutes offered on the voucher or offer monthly/quarterly/yearly based subscriptions which allows unlimited access during that period.
