Microsoft quietly listed up a notice announcing that its Encarta encyclopedia won’t make it to the next year. Worldwide MSN Encarta websites will shut down on October 31, 2009 while the Japanese Encarta site will make an exit on December 31, 2009. Microsoft will also stop selling Student and Encarta Premium software by June of this year.
The exact reason for the closure is unknown but Microsoft’s FAQ page claims that “people today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past” which has made them to exit the Encarta business.
If you’re an existing subscriber to the Encarta service, you can read more at the FAQ page.
