Sanyo from Japan is trying to break the barriers in the Blu-Ray arena. By increasing power of the emitting rays to 450 mW, they managed to develop a new blu-ray laser which supersedes the current 8X lasers in the market and also has the capability to record four layers of data which makes the total space to go up to 100GB. This means that the new discs with four layers would be able to store around 8 hours of high definition video at 1080p resolution.
However, selling these 12X drives will not be easy for Sanyo. To enable them to cash in their developed technology, they need an approval from Blu-ray Disc Association so that this technology can be supported by all manufacturers.
