It seems the Blackberry security controversy in India will finally come to an end. Department of Telecommunication (DoT), Intelligence Bureau and National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) have claimed to crack the Blackberry encryption codes which helps them to track the data sent from a Blackberry device to a non Blackberry device. The government has successfully tested this on operators like Airtel, Vodafone, BPL Mobile and Reliance barring the newest entrant Tata Indicom.
The whole thing started when Tata Indicom approached DoT to seek approval for starting their own Blackberry services but was turned down initially citing ‘Blackberry as a security threat’. Then the round of negotiations began between RIM and government to allow them to track the e-mails and share the master decryption key. RIM denied sharing the key saying that the security integrated does not allow any third party or even RIM to read user information.
The reply from RIM is awaited but such snooping from the government can definitely hamper sales of Blackberry services which is known for its security measures.
