Nokia N-Gage QD: Review

July 29, 2004 By Kunal G Leave a Comment

The N-Gage which gave a new look to mobile phones was a big hit. Nokia targeted Nintendo’s Gameboy Advance with a handheld console which was also a phone. But some of the flaws of N-Gage made Nokia to think. The most irritating part was to switch of the unit to replace the game cartridge (MMC) whenever you want to play another game. The wierd ‘sidetalking’ because of the badly shaped speaker and mic. I call it wierd because every time you have to hold the phone sideways to talk. And of course, the buttons were placed badly an was uncomfortable to use.

The new N-Gage QD eliminated all the flaws of the former N-Gage.The hardware and software are the same in N-Gage QD as of in earlier N-Gage.Only the looks and ergonomics is changed in this new gamedeck. N-Gage QD is smaller than the old N-Gage and weighs around 150 g, which is good for a gamdeck. N-Gage QD eliminated the ‘sideway’ talkin’ and also it introduced the hot-swap system which means you dont have to switch off the phone to change the game cartridges.

The new N-Gage QD uses Symbian OS and has a support for JAVA applications, supports Bluetooth and GPRS but no IrDA connectivity. It also supports Multiplayer gaming. You can team up with your friend or play against him. And of course you need the copy of the game and N-Gage QD. It comes with a 3.4 internal memory but can be increased by add-on memory cards. N-Gage QD includes many of the latest games like Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, The Sims: Bustin’ Out, Unreal Tournament 2004, Fifa 2004 and many more.

The N-Gage QD comes around 11.5K with bill and at around 10K in grey market. This phone is totally for game freaks and I dont recommend this phone who does not play games or play very little games.
