EPIC Foundation, a non-profit organization, has launched the first AI-powered Education Tablet designed in India. Crafted by VVDN Technologies in collaboration with MediaTek India and CoRover.ai, this indigenously manufactured device boasts a plethora of features and is hailed for its repairable and upgradable design, addressing issues surrounding the digital gap and e-waste accumulation.
The company plans to produce up to three lakh tablets intended for distribution to state governments. Although commercial manufacturing has not yet commenced, the company has already secured an MoU for over 12,000 units with entities such as IRIS Global and Vedavaag Systems Ltd.
The MILKYWAY Tab boasts an 8-inch 1280×800 IPS display, MediaTek MT8766A processor, 3/4GB RAM, and 32/64GB storage capacity. It features 5MP front and 8MP rear cameras, a 5,100mAh battery, and runs on Android 13. With support for 4G LTE connectivity, the tablet offers a sleek design with 5-finger touch support. Key highlights include the integrated India-made BharatGPT virtual assistant for student assistance, video and chatbot options, a speech translation app by CoRover.ai, and a focus on repairability for sustainability.
The tablet stands out by seamlessly incorporating the BharatGPT virtual assistant, aimed at fostering digital education and facilitating language translation across various Indian languages, thus promoting inclusivity. The primary goal is to enhance schools’ access to cost-effective devices with extended lifespans, while also stimulating demand for domestically produced electronics that contribute to societal empowerment.
