Netflix today announced price cuts for its plans in India. The new plans now start from Rs. 149 and goes up to Rs. 649 for the top-most plan, which is a substantial price cut for the American streaming company.
The mobile-only plan that is streamable either on one smartphone or one tablet has been reduced to Rs. 149 from the original Rs. 199. The Basic plan is now priced at Rs. 199 from the previous Rs. 499 price that streams at standard resolution on one smartphone/tablet/PC/TV while the Standard plan will now be charged at Rs. 499 versus the previous Rs. 649. The Standard plan brings Full HD streaming for all devices and 2 streams simultaneously. Meanwhile the top-tier Premium plan is at Rs. 649 from Rs. 799 that brings 4 simultaneous device streams in 4K+HDR resolution.
This is an unexpected move from Netflix, considering they have been increasing the price in other markets. While most of the price reductions are reasonable, the biggest gain is for the existing and potential Basic plan subscribers. Having said that, Netflix still remains the most expensive OTT service in India and has no option of annual plans, unlike the competition.
