Apple’s Tim Cook today published an open letter to its customers revealing the FBI and the U.S. government have asked them to create a backdoor to the iPhone with regards to a particular case. In a carefully worded statement, Apple CEO explains the reasons why it is detrimental to create a backdoor, which in the wrong hands, could wreak havoc and massive breach of data and more importantly trust.
The statement also argues that Apple can create a backdoor to a single iPhone but says that it would ignore the “basics of digital security”.
This letter is actually a smart move by Apple. They know defying a court order could mean some repercussion and the best strategy is to throw everything out in the open to customers in a hope that public outcry will make the government re-evaluate the decision.
