Google had acquired Motorola back in 2012 and just two years after the Google acquisition, Lenovo has confirmed to buy the Motorola Mobility unit from the Android maker for $2.91 billion.
Lenovo is growing rapidly in the smartphone market and the Chinese phone maker feels, Motorola’s acquisition will help them to advance their reach with Motorola’s know-how and over 2,000 patents.
Lenovo plans to keep the Motorola branding intact, just like Lenovo did with the ThinkPad when they acquired the unit from IBM in 2005.
Google will still keep the majority of patents from Motorola and in a blog post, Larry Page claims this will help them to “defend the entire Android ecosystem” and enable Google to focus on improving the Google ecosystem.
