When it comes to external storage, there are a lot of options for users these days. There are portable external hard drives, desktop external hard drives, cloud storage and even network-attached storage. Today, we take a look at Seagate Central – their new NAS solution for a centralised backup for multiple computers and devices.
Most storage solutions emphasize on the function and often forget about the form but Seagate has paid extra attention to Seagate Central’s design. The device is really compact and has a mesh-like exterior on the top with the LED light discreetly hidden below the mesh. The front has a brushed aluminium finish while the back side hosts the power port, an Ethernet slot and a USB port.
Setting up Seagate Central is fairly easy if you follow the instructions provided in the box. Connect the Seagate Central with the router, power it up and install the Central Dashboard software. The software supports both Windows and Mac OS X and allows users to back up the content, adjust other drive settings etc.
The software also allows users to backup or share content from the Seagate Central to social networking sites like Facebook, similar to its Backup Plus range.
Seagate Central’s main aim is to become a personal cloud and it manages to successfully do so. Once the data is on the Seagate Central, users can remotely access content from the Seagate access website from anywhere in the world or if you’re on the same network, you can access and stream the data on the tablet or a smartphone with the help of Seagate’s dedicated app.
Furthermore, Seagate has an app for Samsung Smart TVs that makes it easy to stream content off the Central and supports Apple AirPlay.
To sum this up, we would say Seagate Central is a NAS but is able to do a lot of things you wouldn’t expect from a regular NAS device. Not only Seagate Central makes it easier to backup files but also makes it easier to stream multimedia files with the choice of apps for various devices.
The 2TB Seagate Central goes for Rs. 12,000.
