Qualcomm has teamed up with Nexleaf Analytics, in collaboration with the Energy and Resources Institute New Delhi (TERI), Project Surya and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to develop an app called SootSwap that will monitor the use and incentivize the adoption of clean cooking in India.
The SootSwap is a temperature-sensing mobile app that will be pre-loaded on a Brew CDMA or an Android phone and each time the temperature rises due to firing up of the stove, the app wil start collecting data like the number of times and duration of the stove used, amount of carbon footprint and so on.
As a part of the pilot phase that aims to demonstrate the benefits of the adoption of clean cookstoves, Project Surya will enable SootSwap-enabled phones and cookstoves to 2,000 households through bank financing. Using these tools, families will be allowed to link their reductions in black carbon emissions to carbon credits and thus give an avenue for them to earn more for using cleaner technology.
