Phones in the last few years have become more than devices that can make calls and send messages. They’ve become more like portable computers that come with a decent display, powerful hardware and apps support. By far, the most important thing inside a smartphone is the processor and although there are many vendors in the fray to deliver a quality chip, Qualcomm has been doing it consistently and even improving on its offerings over years.
Founded in 1985, Qualcomm is an American semiconductor company that is headquartered in San Diego, California and is responsible for many products like 3G/LTE chipsets, Snapdragon SoC, wireless charging solution and lots more. However, it is the Snapdragon range of chips that have helped Qualcomm accelerate their growth in the industry.
Today, Snapdragon processors are found in over 770+ devices globally and there are more than 450+devices in development. In fact, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon is the only SoC that is found on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform.
Success Formula
The reason why Snapdragon has become one of the preferred chips for manufacturers is due to no compromise on the performance along with improved power management and low thermal dissipation. And though, the competition is catching up with the features, Qualcomm introduced their new generation of processors at the CES 2013. According to Mr. Paul Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of Qualcomm, the new family of Snapdragon processors offer something for everyone.
The Snapdragon 200 will power the entry-level smartphones; Snapdragon 400 ups the bar a little to mid-range; Snapdragon 600 goes for the high-end with full HD displays; and Snapdragon 800 is for devices that sport over full HD displays.
Born Mobile
Qualcomm was created to make products for mobile devices and with that in mind, they initiated the Born Mobile campaign. It’s actually a fun campaign being run in parts of the globe but according to Ms. Monalisa Sahoo, Senior Director – Marketing at Qualcomm India & South Asia, India won’t be a part of it at this point of time.
Qualcomm Reference Design and Indian manufacturers
Commonly referred to as QRD, it enables manufacturers to push their devices quickly into the market and per Ms. Sahoo they’re seeing a decent amount of traction from Indian manufacturers like Micromax, Lavaand Karbonn.
New products powered by new Qualcomm Snapdragon processors are expected in the coming weeks in India.
