It’s almost certain that TSMC will indeed manufacture the next-generation Apple SoCs. Reuters is reporting that TSMC is trial manufacturing the A6 processors for Apple, which will go in full production only after a suitable yield rate. This means TSMC hasn’t been locked in to manufacture the chips but if they manage to produce the processors with no or less number of defects, Apple may hand over the order to Taiwan-based foundry from Samsung.
“TSMC has got all the authorisation and details ready. Whether Apple puts in a formal order will depend on the yield rate.”
TSMC getting the order will be a huge impact on Samsung’s earnings as they were the sole manufacturer of Apple SoCs used in the iPhone 4 and iPads.
