The proliferation of cheap USB flash disks and DVDs have already crippled floppy disc usage, Sony will put the final nail in the coffin, at least in Japan. Sony who has a 70 percent market share in the floppy disc market in Japan will stop selling the 3.5-inch discs by end of March 2011. Sony is apparently the only domestic player to sell floppies in their home market and also sells in some other international regions like India.
Sony’s Japan sales for the fiscal 2009 were recorded at 12 million as compared to 47 million in fiscal 2002.
