Not the best of analogies I must say but a recent UN report says that Indians have more mobile phones than they have toilets.
“It is a tragic irony to think that in India, a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones, about half cannot afford the basic necessity and dignity of a toilet,” said Zafar Adeel, Director of United Nations University’s Institute for Water, Environment and Health (IWEH).
The report was released by United Nations University (UNU) as a part of their Millennium Development Goal (MDG) that has vowed to increase the proportion of people gaining access to safe water and basic sanitation by 50 percent.
The report says India has about 545 million cell phones, enough to serve about 45% of the population whereas only 366 million people or 31% of the population had access to basic sanitation in 2008.
