With plenty of e-book readers in the fray (or coming soon), it’s somewhat difficult for companies to differentiate its offering from others. But LG’s subsidiary, LG Display has prepared a prototype that will become the first e-book reader fitted with a solar charging panel. The intrinsic details regarding the reader are not known but the thin-film solar cell measures 10cm in width and height with weight of 20 grams and 0.7mm of thickness. As for its charging prowess, LG Display claims a direct exposure to sunlight for about 4 to 5 hours gives an additional day of runtime.
LG Display is showcasing the solar e-book reader prototype at the ongoing International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2009.
