Want some motivation to trade in your fat PS3 for the slimmer, matte version? No, we won’t regurgitate the known facts like the extra 40gigs or ability to consume 40 percent less power or 36 percent lighter but we’re talking about the thing powering the console. Yup, the Cell processor. The Cell processor used in PS3 Slim which is jointly developed by IBM, Toshiba and Sony is using the newer 45nm process as compared the current PS3’s 65nm cell CPU. The difference? Well, it’s more power efficient, quieter and as per IDG New Service “adds hardware enhancements that make it speedier.” Surprisingly, Sony did not happen to say anything about the performance on the unveiling day but it will be interesting to see if the upgraded processor have any role to impact the gaming performance.
CNet has reviewed the PS3 Slim and found that Slim “was pretty much like using the fat PS3.”
