After being turned down by the central government for distributing OLPC laptops nationwide, two state governments and one private entity (presumably ADAG backed Reliance) have come forward to buy a total of 250,000 units. These laptops are expected to arrive in June and will make its way to 1500 schools in suburban and rural areas.
Talking to Medianama, Sanjay Jha, President of OLPC India confirmed the price of the laptops. For orders larger than 10,000 units, the price is Rs. 15,000 including all taxes or Rs. 11,000 excluding taxes. Add 15 percent more if the quantity is just around a few hundred units.
The connectivity provided with the laptop will be managed locally. In case of no broadband, a mesh network connected to a server will be installed.
