Intel had signed a chipset licensing agreement with Nvidia in 2004 that enabled Intel to use Nvidia’s 3D, GPU, CUDA and other technologies while Nvidia could bring platform innovations to Intel based systems. Now Intel feels they have been snitched because Nvidia is encroaching their territory, by providing better CPU integrated with memory controller solutions than the inventor themselves.
After a year of failed negotiations, Intel has sued Nvidia claiming that the chipset license applies only to older generation CPUs excluding the recent Nehalem. Nvidia obviously miffed by this, has responded by fighting and are confident that their license agreement applies to newer generation CPUs too.
Nvidia’s ION is for instance improvises Intel’s solution by providing CPU, GPU on one compact die, making it 10 times better than the current Intel’s three chip design.
