PS3’s v3.21 firmware is now live. This is an optional update but is a mandatory one if you want to enjoy uninterrupted PSN access, playback of copyright videos etc. System updates generally add some features but in this case, Sony will remove a feature (applicable only to original PS3 owners). The firmware will remove Install Other OS feature that allowed users to install Linux on the console.
Sony claimed security reasons for the removal but it’s been rumored it had to do with Geohot’s recent console hacking, who has also promised to release a Custom Firmware that will emulate all the features of the latest firmware and also keep the Other OS feature enabled.
