Toshiba may have lost the hi-def format battle but they still haven’t lost hope. In another attempt to take a dig at Blu-Ray, they roll out a DVD player which can upscale video quality from 480i/p to 720p or 1080i/p. The video enhancement technology is called as eXtended Detail Enhancement and the first player to be launched with this tech is XD-E500. Apart from the upconversion, XDE gives the users to select picture enhancement modes for greater detail, more vivid colors and stronger contrast to bring the standard DVD quality closer to the HD experience.

The product page clearly mentions “the product does not play HD DVD or Blu-Ray discs” and is just a software enhancer to bring out the closest quality to HD. However, you’ll need HD capable output device to view the upscaled videos. It will sell for $150.
