OLED displays are the future and it seems LG has taken the first major step in order to popularize and make it cheaper. The Korean company announced the development of a 55-inch OLED TV panel, which is touted as the world’s largest. LG says OLED with smaller display sizes (in mobile devices) are expensive to produce but that is not the case when it comes to producing a large panel.

The 55-inch OLED TV panel uses Oxide TFT technology and White OLED which LG says results in lower error rate and higher productivity. Additionally, the use of OLED panels will result in a thinner television set (about 5mm) and boasts a contrast ratio of 100,000:1.

LG will showcase the new panel at CES 2012 next month.

Sony is working on a new “four screen” strategy that will help them to compete with Apple. Sony’s CEO, Sir Howard Stringer revealed to WSJ that they’ve spent the last five years to develop an offering of network services on mobile phones, tablets, TVs and PCs. Although Stringer didn’t divulge the exact date, he did confirm that its finished and will be launched soon.

Stringer also acknowledged the fact that he had “no doubt” about Steve Jobs’ developing a TV set and as a matter of fact Sony is also working on a new TV set. Stringer says Sony has invested “a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set.”

LG has confirmed that this CES they’ll unveil LW6500 Cinema 3D TV that will take “3D TV to new heights of brightness and clarity.” The new Cinema 3D TV will take advantage of LG’s recently developed Film-type Patterned Retarder (FPR) panel and since this panel does not require shutter glasses, the images on the TV will be flicker and blur free, thus reducing eye fatigue.

The flicker free certified TV also boasts a 3D Light Boost, which is nothing but a thin film on the screen to show 3D images at maximum brightness.

Additional features include refresh rate of 200Hz, DLNA, Wi-Fi and DVR ready, USB 2.0, 2D to 3D conversion and HDMI 1.4.

LG will reveal the model at the show and will start selling in select markets soon.

Sony has launched a unique television set for the UK market, which comes embedded with Sony’s 10-year old PS2 console. It’s a smart move by Sony and though I would love to see a similar offering being brought to India, Sony currently has no plans to sell this 22-incher anywhere outside UK.

The Sony Bravia KDL-22PX300 is being sold by Richer Sounds for about $300 and features 4 HDMI ports, 3 USB ports (disappointingly, 2 are USB 1.1) and two Ethernet ports. The TV does not support full HD which is understandable if you want to use it only for PS2 gaming.

At the ongoing CEATEC expo in Japan, Toshiba has unveiled a new LCD TV series that can display 3D content without the need to wear special glasses. The “Glasses-less” 3D REGZA GL1 Series consists of a 20-inch and 12-inch model that creates nine parallax images to create a 3D image. These parallax images are created with the help of the TV’s integrated imaging system and a perpendicular lenticular sheet, allowing the TV to display smooth, natural 3D images.

Additionally, the 20-inch GL1 features an LED-backlit display panel that has 4 times the pixels of a standard full HD panel (829 million pixels) and Cell REGZA engine based on Cell Broadband Engine.

The 20GL1 and 12GL1 will be first launched in Japan by end of December.
