SanDisk has unveiled couple of new SSDs that can be used in upcoming ultra-thin notebooks as well as tablets. The U100 SSD is aimed for use in ultra-thin notebooks and comes in capacities starting from 8GB to up to 256GB. The U100 supports the SATA III interface and boasts a sequential read speed of up to 450MB/s and write speed of 340MB/s. SanDisk will provide the U100 SSDs in variety of form factors, including Half-Slim SATA SSD, mSATA, mSATA mini, 2.5” cased and customized modules.

The iSSD on other hand, can also be integrated in ultra-thin notebooks but is more inclined towards the use in tablets. The i100 iSSD is the smallest and the fastest 128GB SSD that supports SATA III interface and gives a sequential read/write speed of 450/160 MB/s respectively. The iSSD storage capacity ranges from 8GB to 128GB.

SanDisk is currently sampling both the SSDs and is slated for mass production in Q3 2011.

Samsung today announced that they’ve started mass producing 3.5-inch 100GB and 200GB SSDs meant for the enterprise market. These new SSDs are touted to be beneficial to businesses and help them to lower their total cost of ownership over time as it increases performance and decreases power consumption.

The SSDs are based on 40nm single-level-cell (SLC) NAND flash chips and support 3Gb/s SATA interface, allowing SSDs to process random read commands at 47,000 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) and write commands at 29,000 IOPS, which is 130X and 80X higher when compared to a 15K RPM HDD.

Enterprise-centric features include lower power consumption (about 30 percent lower compared to HDD storage), end-to-end data protection function, advanced data encryption and faster read/write speeds with 200GB SSD achieving about 260MB/s sequential read speed and 245MB/s as a sequential write speed.

EMC will be the first recipient of these drives.

Seagate has launched its SSD-HDD Hybrid drives in the Indian market. The 9.5mm 2.5-inch Momentus XT offers a unique way to give consumers the speed of SSDs and affordability of HDDs by integrating 4GB of NAND flash and up to 500GB HDD capacity.

By combining both SSD and HDD onto one drive and using Seagate’s Adaptive Memory technology, the Momentus XT identifies the data pattern and copies frequently accessed data onto the flash memory for quicker access.

This way, Seagate says the Momentus XT Hybrid drive is 100% and 80% faster than conventional disks running at 5,400RPM and 7,200RPM respectively.

Seagate will sell the drive in three storage capacities – 250GB, 320GB and 500GB for Rs. 6,800, Rs. 7,400 and Rs. 8,100 respectively.

Samsung has announced a new 512GB SSD that employs toggle-mode DDR NAND helping high-end notebooks to achieve greater performance and reliability. The toggle-mode DDR structure coupled with SATA 3.0Gbps interface gains a max. sequential read speed of 250MB/s and read speed to up to 220MB/s, which is three times faster than conventional HDDs or can copy two 4GB DVDs in under a minute.

Furthermore, Samsung has developed a low-power controller for toggle-mode DDR that increases performance without increasing power consumption and continuously monitors user’s frequency of use to automatically enable low-power mode, extending notebook’s battery life.

The 512GB SSD uses 30nm 32Gb chip and comes with 256-bit AES encryption, Windows 7 TRIM support.

Mass production of the 512GB SSDs will start from next month.
