Another day another rumor emerges from the Taiwanese shores. The heart of the rumor today is Acer and its ultra-thin notebook Timeline series. Apparently, due to the not so pleasing sales of Acer’s 11.6-inch netbook, its OEM, Quanta Computer has been asked to develop an 11.6-inch ultra-thin notebook.

Ultra-thin chassis means it will fall under its Timeline series and boast more powerful specs that will help to drive its sales. This of course, will be done only after they’ll get rid of its netbook offering, which will be by the way to either discontinue the netbook variant or reduce the price of it.

It looks like Acer is gearing to spruce up its Aspire One range. The image above shows a sleeker 10-inch Aspire One that will be sold alongside the current model. The exact specs are unknown at the moment but the source says it could be an SSD only model with OS options of either Windows or Linux. The SD expansion slot has returned and the aerodynamic shaped metallic hinge to make it sleek. The hinge design is now taken by the VGA and Ethernet port on both sides.

The Indian subsidiary of Acer has announced a further price cut on its current 8.9-inch Aspire One model. This is the second price cut we are seeing in under a month. The new price for the Linux variant now stands at Rs. 14,499 ($301) while the Windows version goes for Rs. 16,499 ($343).

Acer’s aggressive pricing actually hints about something – a 10.1-inch AA1. The price reduction is a possible move to stick the larger Aspire One in the original price bracket, which should be between Rs. 20,000 to 22,000.

Acer’s already ruling the netbook market and their game plan for further penetration is a larger sized Aspire One. The images you’re looking are of a 10.1-inch Aspire One and CES is the likely place for this baby to officially declare the successor of the highest selling netbook. There are not many changes in the specifications, but there will be no storage expansion slot and HDD and Linux combo option. Multicard reader will be placed for the expansion slot and only a single DIMM slot for RAM (up to 2GB). 3G, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR will form a part of the optional configuration.

Acer will also give a minor facelift to the successor. There will be a newly designed laptop hinge and a brushed metal finish around the keyboard. The trackpad mouse buttons will now be placed at the bottom.

Didn’t we expect this? Acer has won a battle against the numero uno Asus in the netbook market. According to the figures of the Q3 netbook sales, Acer managed to capture 38.3 percent of the market share followed by Asus at 30.3 percent. The total number of units shipped by Acer was 2.15 million and Asus did 1.7 million only. With Aspire One sales gaining grounds, Asus will need something extra ordinary to take back that share. Don’t you think?
