Australian court might have barred from selling the specialized USB dongle that enabled PS3 jailbreak but hackers have found a new way to get the same result with a phone. The new PS3 jailbreak currently works only with Nokia’s N900 and Palm Pre but we think it is just a matter of time when this code will be ported to other platforms as well, say Android.

Needless to say, this doesn’t go well with Sony but considering the source code available to all, Sony should rather think to patch the exploit instead of contemplating a lawsuit.

Nokia has officially announced its only-Maemo powered device in India. The N900 will start retailing from the latter half of this month for Rs. 30,639. The price may seem on the higher side but N900 brings some interesting specs to the table like an ARM Cortex A8 600MHz CPU, PowerVR SGX GPU with OpenGL ES 2.0 support, 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens, 3.5-inch touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, 3G, 32GB of internal memory, GPS, FM Transmitter, Bluetooth and microSD card slot.

N900 is one device that handles multitasking really well, offers good multimedia experience and with Maemo onboard – which is basically a Debian-based Linux distro – it gives you the liberty to install most debian apps.

You can read out N900 review at the link below.

Nokia may lead the pack in the mobile handset race but when it comes to their smartphone market share, it’s totally a different story to tell. Nokia has evidently struggled to keep pace with the growing competition in the smartphone space but is trying their best to gain some lost ground.

It has the aging Symbian OS that currently powers few Nokia smartphones like N97, N97 mini, 5800XM and they’ve Maemo, a linux-based platform that has often been undermined by the Finnish giant. Maemo OS is responsible to produce some decent tablet devices in the past but it’s the N900 that is the first device from Nokia to marry the internet tablet with cellular capabilities. But does N900 deliver? We delve to check out.

Good news for N900 users is that Nokia has released the impending v1.2 update for the Maemo5-based handset. The new update brings in a lot of improvements like menu system UI, email has been improved to allow users accept or decline invitation in their inbox, Facebook chat support as well as video calling is possible now. Moreover, Nokia has added number of games in the Ovi Store, portrait internet browsing and subtle UI revamp to Ovi Maps.

The update will first be released in UK today while the rest of the regions will receive it from tomorrow.

Moving to the bad news, Nokia has confirmed not to bring the MeeGo platform to the N900 when its consumer ready. Nokia acknowledges that although N900 is being used by the MeeGo development team for testing purposes, they’re not planning a “full scale commercial MeeGo upgrade on the Nokia N900”. However, Nokia promises to support the Maemo platform on the N900 and will continue to roll updates in the near future.

If you ever felt N900’s Cortex A8 600MHz clock speed a bit underpowered, Maemo forum users have found a way to speed things up. By installing a modded kernel, a user can overclock the N900’s processor to a speedy 1GHz. This, as confirmed by modders makes the N900 fast but does with a few caveats. If you too are thinking to jump the gun, let me tell you that this can potentially void your warranty and secondly you won’t be able to update the phone directly via the Nokia Software Updater. A new firmware means you’ll have to manually flash the firmware to the device.

However, if the aforementioned flaws are no problem for you, head over here for the complete overclocking tutorial.

Nokia N900 seems to be getting a lot of love from developers. After seeing couple of videos running Windows as well as Mac operating systems, developers have come forward to exploit the gaming part of it. One video uploaded on YouTube shows N900 flawlessly running Duke Nukem 3D with Wiimote acting as an controller while the second fulfills our inner SNES wishes with PS3’s Sixaxis performing the controller duties.

Unfortunately, you wouldn’t be able emulate the result of Duke Nukem 3D + Wiimote combo but if you’re willing to play classic SNES games with PS3 controller, head over here to read the full instructions.

We’ve seen quite a few videos showing Nokia devices running Windows OSes but this seems to be the first time where a Nokia device, in this case N900, running Mac OS.

User by the name of toninikkanen uploaded the video who claims to have used PearPC emulator. It took over 1.5 hours just to reach “About this Mac” screen, which basically says it all that Mac OS on N900 doesn’t work all hunky dory. However, it’s a feat nonetheless. Enjoy the video below.

Nokia had a N900 meetup in London and some executive from the marketing team blurted out that Nokia will drop Symbian from Nseries devices by 2012, which was later debunked by the Finnish company as “completely premature”.

“While it is our policy not to disclose details of our product roadmap, we’d like to explicitly communicate that we remain firmly committed to Symbian as our smartphone platform of choice. Any speculation on what our 2012 roadmap, including operating systems and product branding, are completely premature.

As we have stated earlier, Nokia has multiple platforms to serve different purposes and address different markets. Symbian is more successful than ever in bringing smartphones to the masses. Maemo is our software of choice for devices based on technology that you’d typically find inside a desktop computer. It delivers a different user experience and enables us to widen the market we can address.”

Although the official statement was expected, Maemo-powered Nseries devices make perfect sense. Nokia says Maemo software is made for devices that we’d associate with a computer and Nseries phones are, in fact, marketed like one (N97 was marketed as a computer in your pocket).

Nseries is the top-of-the-line range for Nokia and dedicating the best is the only way to go if Nokia wants to give a decent fight to iPhone and the likes.

Nokia also showcased its Maemo 5-powered N900 at the N97 mini unveiling. N900 looks and works much better compared to the Symbian counterparts. The 3.5-inch screen despite being resistive is responsive while its keyboard is nicely spaced out and comfortable to type on. Unfortunately, the chances of this being released in India looks very slim.
