AMD will expand its Radeon brand to sell RAMs as well. The chip company that also happens to sell GPUs under the same brand has started selling Radeon-branded DDR3 RAMs in Japan. In addition to the claim that these RAMs are optimized for AMD CPUs and APUs, the DDR3 RAM will be launched under three series – Entertainment, Ultra Pro Gaming and Enterprise. The difference between the series is the speed, which is 1333MHz and 1600MHz for Entertainment and Ultra Pro Gaming respectively. AMD is yet to confirm the speed of the Enterprise Series RAMs.

All the RAMs will be available in 2GB density.

AMD Radeon RAMs are available in Japan in limited numbers for a price of around 1,570 yen or USD20.

Intel, AMD, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung Electronics LCD Business and LG Display have announced their intention to phase out analog display outputs like low voltage differential signaling technology (LVDS) and 2 decade old Video Graphics Array (VGA).

Intel says they plan to end the LVDS support by 2013 followed by VGA in 2015 and adopt the new low power digital interfaces like the DisplayPort and HDMI that support deeper colors and high resolution.

Although companies believe that VGA-equipped projectors and monitors will keep the interface alive beyond 2015, the integration of DisplayPort will help to fill the void since it is backward compatible with VGA and DVI via certified adapters.

AMD and Intel have generally been at loggerheads but both the companies have agreed to come together to develop the MeeGo OS. The confirmation came from AMD at the MeeGo Conference in Dublin who will provide “engineering resources” for MeeGo and expects that it will be adopted “mobile and embedded device makers over time.”

“We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units,” Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice president of software development, AMD.

AMD, owners of ATI have decided that they’ll drop the ATI brand name by end of this year. This decision is a result of an internal marketing research done by the company that claims that AMD is perceived as a superior brand than ATI. Moreover, AMD is said to be competitive than ATI when compared to other GPU makers, say Nvidia.

Anandtech says the brand change will start with the introduction of Ontario – AMD’s GPU and CPU on a single die – and will launch a Radeon HD GPU that will be marketed under the AMD brand.

Asus has announced a new motherboard series in India that with a switch of a button instantly unlocks cores of an AMD processor. The motherboard supports Phenom II, Athlon II and Sempron 100 Series processors and comes with ATI CrossFireX, DX10.1, SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 support.

The USP however, is its Core Unlocker feature. By turning on a switch on the motherboard, it activates the latent AMD CPU cores, effectively increasing performance to support intensive processing or multitasking. Additionally, it also comes with a GPU Boost tool that instantly overclocks the integrated GPU.

Asus is selling two motherboards – one with USB 3.0 and one without. The one with USB 3.0 will cost Rs. 12,500 and the other with only USB 2.0 will cost Rs. 10,500. The prices are without taxes.
