Samsung is contemplating to buy a decent chunk of patent portfolio to safeguard itself against the current Apple lawsuit. Bloomberg reports Samsung is in the bidding race with Google and Apple to buy InterDigital Inc.’s patent portfolio and are apparently in private talks with the company.

About 8,800 patents are up for grabs which are related to mobile technologies used in Android handsets, iPhone and even BlackBerry phones.

Unlike Apple, Samsung will try hard to get some or all so that they can leverage it against Apple. According to some analysts, InterDigital possesses some key patents where Samsung might have to pay a big premium.
