India is a highly competitive market when it comes to mobile phones. There are over 650 million mobile phone subscribers in India and according to a report by IDC, the last quarter saw a record surge in mobile phone shipments as well. The sales touched 38.63 million units, which is a 6.3 percent rise on quarter-on-quarter basis.

Interestingly, the report also shares the top five vendors and though Nokia retained the top spot with 36.3 percent market share, it’s the emerging Indian vendors who are taking a chunk of share from international vendors (Nokia enjoyed more than 50 percent in 2009). Emerging vendors have garnered about 33.2 percent of the market share (chart above), which has also contributed to the rise of use of dual and triple-SIM phones.

The top five vendors for first half of this year are Nokia, Samsung, G’Five, Micromax and Spice.
