Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is seeking an explanation from Apple related to overheating of first-gen iPod Nanos. Japan has set the deadline to August 4, failing to which, Apple will have to pay a fine of at least 300,000 yen.

Apple has stopped selling the first-gen iPod Nano but the ministry has ordered iPod maker to “explain the cause of overheating, whether similar incidents have been reported in Japan or abroad and what prevention and cautionary measures have been taken to prevent future problems.”

The overheating incident came into light in 2008 and since then 27 cases have been reported of overheating while recharging and causing six iPods to catch fire, including four users suffering minor burns.
