Sony Corp.’s new finger vein authentication technology makes fingerprint recognition and other security measures a thing of the past. With Mofiria (yes, that’s what they call) onboard, devices like mobile phones and laptops could provide more security by scanning the finger vein patterns as it is different for different people and does not change over the years.

The pattern is extracted with the help of CMOS sensor which diagonally captures scattered light inside the finger veins to make a possible plane layout and then store it onto the device. Sony claims that the vein image does not require a fixed finger position which makes it very much accurate, giving 0.1% for the FRR (false rejection rate) and less than 0.0001% for the FAR (false acceptance rate).

Sony aims to out Mofiria equipped devices in this year itself.
