Synaptics, which was into making iPod clickwheels previously has unveiled a conceptual phone using its ClearPad touchscreen interface. The phone is called as the Onyx which is jointly developed by Pilotfishand has no buttons present. It uses gestures and taps to execute a command like placing the phone near the cheek to receive a call, assigning functions to two-finger taps, closing tasks by swiping an “X” over them or sending messages by swiping them off the screen.

The phone won’t see the light soon but Synaptics feel that it can give run for its money against the big ones like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola or Samsung. The ClearPad technology will be available to other manufacturers by the end of this year.
